Meghan Markle and Prince Harry faced a wave of backlash on Twitter on Monday after Netflix released a new trailer for their upcoming docuseries, “Harry & Meghan.”
In the video, the couple can be seen in a car as Harry is heard saying. “It’s really hard to look back on it now and go, ‘What on Earth happened?'”
The Duke of Sussex then reflects on the British monarchy and how it impacted their lives. “There’s a hierarchy of the family,” Harry says. “You know, there’s leaking, but there’s also planting of stories.”
The trailer touched on the burden women who marry into the royal family face and referenced the death of Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana.
Harry also noted that he realized his family would not protect Meghan and was worried history would repeat itself. “No one knows the full truth,” Prince Harry says. “We know the full truth.”
Meghan and Harry left the royal family in 2020 for several reasons, including a lack of privacy. However, following the release of the latest trailer for their upcoming docuseries, the couple is facing backlash for remaining in the spotlight.
On Monday, Harry and Meghan’s names became linked to various trending hashtags, with many Twitter users slamming the couple for the docuseries, which appears to paint the royal family in a negative light.
“#HarryandMeghan never take any responsibility. It’s always someone else’s fault, or it’s Harry’s trauma. I’m sorry, but loss of a loved one is not an excuse to be destructive!” one user wrote.
However, some Twitter users rallied around Meghan and Harry and supported the upcoming Netflix documentary. One user accused the royal family of intentionally trying to destroy the couple’s romance.
“I hope it’s revealed that the royal family and UK press worked with the Markles to ruin #HarryandMeghan’s relationship. They knew Meghan had a sterling reputation & unsuccessfully tried to use her grifter paternal relatives to put a spanner in the works. #HarryandMeghanonNetflix,” the fan tweeted.
Part one of “Harry and Meghan” will be released Thursday on the streaming platform. Part 2 will be available on Dec. 15 — the same day Kate Middleton will host the second annual royal Christmas concert, which will honor the late Queen Elizabeth.
