Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez celebrated sanctions imposed on Chilean government officials by the State Department on Friday, saying that the administration of “Communist Gabriel Boric is undermining U.S. policy by supporting Cuba’s murderous dictatorship.”
The State Department said it imposed visa restrictions on “three Chilean government officials who knowingly directed, authorized, funded, provided significant support to, and/or carried out activities that compromised critical telecommunications infrastructure and undermined regional security in our hemisphere.”
The document did not specify who the officials are or what specific actions they have taken, but noted that the decisions “reaffirm President Trump’s commitment to protect America’s economic prosperity and national security interests in our region.”
“In its twilight, the Boric government’s legacy shall be further tarnished by actions that undermine regional security at the ultimate expense of the Chilean people. We look forward to advancing shared priorities, including those that strengthen security in our hemisphere, with the incoming Kast Administration,” the statement concluded.
Boric rejected the development, ruling out that “our country promotes any kind that goes against our security or that of our region.”

“Chile is a country that is proud of its sovereignty and profoundly respectful of national and international law. We don’t accept anyone dictating what we can or can’t do beyond the law. Our sovereignty is to be respected,” he added.
