- The senator also got booed by Houston Astros fans
A day after Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tx., achieved a career feat of completing 10 years in the senate, he was humbled by Houston Astros fans at the World Series victory parade Monday.
Relentless fans booed him as he waved to fans from a parade float Monday. Multiple people from the crowd flipped the bird at him and one of them went as far as throwing a can of White Claw beer at the senator when the rally was in the 2400 block of Smith Street in Houston, NBC News reported.
The internet was flooded with many videos showing the senator being booed down by the crowd. Police arrested one man for throwing a beer can at the senator.
“The beer can struck the Senator in the chest/neck area,” Houston police tweeted. The person who threw the can was identified as a 33-year-old male. His identity was not revealed, Yahoo reported.
“He was taken to jail and faces assault charges. We will release the suspect’s name and booking photo here when formal charges are filed,” police said.
Following the incident, Twitter was flooded with many theories, some of which were outright homophobic, while others suggested it could be a planned move on behalf of Cruz’s campaign.
“I love how the jeep slows down after so anyone that wants another shot could have an easier time to hit him. Truly the best protection service,” read a tweet.
“Or wait… you might be in to something. The right lovers their conspiracy theories. HERE ME OUT. WHAT IF THIS WAS PLANNED BY HIS CAMP. The Pelosi thing hurt them a bit in polls so they wanna have their own little moment,” another person responded.
“That’s not too far fetched. (Funny the guy caught it like he knew where it would come from). Hmmmmmm,” another weighed in.
Cruz is not new to being subjected to booing and heckling by Astros fans. He was waving at fans from the bleachers at Yankee stadium ahead of the team’s faceoff with the New York Yankees on Oct. 23 when at least three people made abusive gestures at him, while others booed him off.
