Robert Lewandowski has opened up on why he struggled in FC Barcelona’s 2-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Lewandowski has had a fine start to his life at Barcelona since his move to Camp Nou from Bayern Munich in the summer. He scored in five consecutive games for Barcelona ahead of the Catalans’ trip to Munich.
Unfortunately, Lewandowski failed to help Barcelona at Allianz Arena, which was his first game against his former club since his summer departure. The Polish striker missed several good chances and failed to find the back of the net as his new club ended up losing the game 2-0.
Lewandowski, who is on international duty with Poland, said the fixture against Bayern Munich was not just another sports outing for him but it was an “emotional match.”
“Of course, I wanted to beat Bayern. And I also wanted to score but when you talk about feelings, you can’t completely silence them because it’s not that long since I left Bayern. The match was a big challenge for me. It was impossible for me to stop all those feelings. It was more than a sports match for me, it was an emotional match,” said Lewandowski in a recent interview.
Lewandowski spent eight seasons at Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2022 He helped the Bavarians win many trophies, including eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.
“The most emotional moment? As soon as you enter the stadium. Although it was a strange feeling to go to another locker room and warm up in another area,” the 34-year-old striker added.
Even though Barcelona lost against Bayern Munich last week, which was their first defeat of the 2022-23 campaign, there were some positives.
“The game against Bayern was a lesson for us. Before we started it we didn’t expect to be able to impose our style and create a lot of chances. Now we know we can. This game showed that we can do that and create chances in tough games. It’s true that we made mistakes … But to be honest, we deserved to win against Bayern or, at least, draw,” Lewandowski explained.
Lewandowski has netted 11 goals and provided two assists in eight competitive appearances for Barcelona in the ongoing season.
Barcelona and Bayern Munich will come face to face for the return leg of the group stage fixture at Camp Nou on Oct. 26.
