Most of California’s border with Mexico will be turned into a militarized zone to further expand security operations and aid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
Border Report noted that the area will extend from the Arizona state line to the Otay Mountain Wilderness, going through the Imperial Valley and several border communities. The area will be transferred to the Navy to reinforce “the historic role public lands have played in safeguarding national sovereignty.”
“By working with the Navy to close long-standing security gaps, we are strengthening national defense, protecting our public lands from unlawful use, and advancing the President’s agenda,” said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum when addressing the development.
The Trump administration has turned several areas throughout the southern border during the administration. There, service members patrol and detain those who seek to cross into the country unlawfully. They are charged with trespassing on military property, as well as illegal entry.
Troops have expanded their role in immigration enforcement, conducting direct arrests of migrants attempting to cross the border.
The first ones took place in early June after three migrants entered such an area in New Mexico. They were then turned over to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and charged with illegally entering militarized areas.
