Teams have cut their rosters down to 53 players for the start of the 2022 NFL season, but there will be plenty of changes over the course of the next 18 weeks. Organizations that have the most money under the salary cap have the most flexibility when it comes to making in-season additions.
The Los Angeles Chargers have the league’s highest payroll at $197.359 million, according to Spotrac. With close to $4 million in dead money and a $208.2 million salary cap, the Chargers have $7.7 million to spend this season.
Which teams have the most salary cap space?
The Cleveland Browns lead the league, by far, with $38.688 million under the salary cap, according to Spotrac. Cleveland’s $130.236 million payroll is the second-lowest in all of football. The Browns have just north of $30 million in dead money.
The Atlanta Falcons have a league-low payroll of $111.381 million. Atlanta doesn’t have much cap space because trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts forced the Falcons to incur a $40.525 million dead cap hit.
The Las Vegas Raiders have the second-most cap space at $20.397 million. Las Vegas has a payroll just north of $137 million. Derek Carr and Davante Adams signed lucrative contracts this offseason, and their base salaries will increase significantly in the coming years.
With $125.582 million in cap space, the Dallas Cowboys are third in the league. The Cowboys’ $158.481 million payroll is less than that of 20 other teams. Dallas is the world’s most valuable franchise, according to Forbes, with a valuation of $8 billion.
The Carolina Panthers ($11.069 million) and Denver Broncos ($10.271 million) round out the top five in terms of cap space. Both teams traded for new starting quarterbacks in the offseason.
The Kansas City Chiefs are at the bottom of the league with only $475,644 in cap space. Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones have a combined cap hit of more than $65 million.
