Ashton Kutcher revealed that he thought Reese Witherspoon didn’t “like” him after she turned down several offers to star opposite him in a romantic-comedy movie.
While promoting his and Witherspoon’s upcoming Netflix rom-com “Your Place or Mine,” Kutcher appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” where he recalled how his projects kept getting rejected by the “Legally Blonde” actress over the years.
“For however long, I’ve done 10 romantic comedies. I want to say, like, five out of the 10 … I would call my agent and be like, ‘Can Reese do it? Is Reese available? Should we get Reese? Can we get Reese? Can we call Reese? Can someone — does somebody have Reese’s number? We should call Reese,'” Kutcher said Monday.
“And she was always working on something else. At a point, I was like, ‘I just think she doesn’t like me,” he recalled. “For the longest time, I was like, ‘It’s not going to happen.'”
The two stars finally got to work together in Netflix’s “Your Place or Mine,” which marks Kutcher’s first rom-com since 2011, when he appeared in “New Year’s Eve” and starred opposite Natalie Portman in “No Strings Attached.”
Kutcher revealed that Witherspoon recently told him why she found him to be a little “weird.” The actor apparently brought a cooler to a party they both attended, and Witherspoon informed him that there was a bar and that he didn’t need to bring his own drinks.
Kutcher jokingly told host Jimmy Fallon that he didn’t want to pay $20 for a cocktail.
In addition to getting the chance to work with Witherspoon, the actor said that he decided to sign on for “Your Place or Mine” due to the script, which was written by “The Devil Wears Prada” and “27 Dresses” screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna.
In the new film, Witherspoon and Kutcher play Debbie and Peter, lifelong best friends who live on opposite coasts and later realize they’re in love after swapping houses and lives for a week.
The plot is not unlike Kutcher’s own real-life friendship turned romance with his wife Mila Kunis.
The pair met on the set of “That ’70s Show” when they were teenagers, but they only began dating in early 2012, 13 years later.
Kunis previously shared on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast that she and Kutcher started hooking up rather than dating when they first became more than friends.
“We lived our movies out, where we were like, ‘Let’s just hook up. Let’s have fun. We’re both single. We both trust each other. Everything’s great,'” she said, according to Us Weekly. “None of us wanted tension. OK, great. We hooked up for three months. And just like our movies, one of us caught feelings.”
When Kunis confessed her feelings to Kutcher, she said he immediately asked her to move in with him.
“Your Place of Mine” will premiere on Netflix on Friday.
