A decomposed torso was discovered Thursday afternoon inside a suitcase dumped in bushes in Faridabad, India.
According to police, the body appeared to be at least a couple of months old, The Times of India reported. Authorities asked the help of forensic experts to determine if it was of a man or a woman.
At around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, the police control room received a call from a passerby saying that a blue suitcase was lying unattended, seemingly abandoned, inside the bushes along Pali road in the Surajkund area.
Officers responded to the area and found the suitcase with flies hovering around it.
After checking the suitcase, they discovered the remains of the torso severely decomposed and wrapped in a plastic sheet. There were also a few pieces of torn clothes and a belt inside the suitcase, according to police.
“The body is so decomposed that we could not ascertain if it is of a man or a woman. We have sent the body parts to a forensic lab. It appears the person was murdered somewhere else and the suitcase hidden inside the bushes. The limbs were chopped off to fit inside the suitcase,” police spokesperson Sube Singh said, according to the outlet.
According to police, they launched an investigation into the matter and were checking all CCTV footage around the area. Authorities were yet to perform an autopsy as of Thursday evening.
“Nearby police stations in Delhi, Gurugram and even Nuh have been informed about the torso. We are looking at missing complaints filed at all police stations in the vicinity,” Singh added.
“The torso has been kept inside a mortuary. The victim appears to have been dead for a few months. We are trying to find out if it was of a man or woman. The forensic team is working on that and an FIR will be registered soon,” said deputy commissioner of police Narender Kadiyan.
Police are encouraging people to come forward with any information on any missing persons. Two phone numbers were provided by the police — 9582200127 and 9999150000.
A suitcase containing a body of an unidentified man was also found earlier this month at the Jalandhar railway station, India Today reported.
According to police, a passerby first spotted the red suitcase lying on the premises of the railway station. After realizing that it was left unattended, he went near the suitcase and saw a leg hanging out. He immediately told the railway police about it.
A police team, along with a forensics team and a dog squad, responded to the spot to conduct an investigation. The police team took custody of the suitcase and sent the body for a post-mortem for examination. Further investigation is being carried out as of this writing.
