Former Denver Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman has died at the age of 31. Hillman’s family shared the tragic news of his passing through the athlete’s Instagram page.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother & father, Ronnie K Hillman Jr. Ronnie quietly and peacefully transitioned today in the company of his family and close friends,” the family said in a statement.
“We as the family, appreciate the prayers and kind words that have already been expressed. We ask that you would give us time to process our feelings as we prepare to lay our precious RJ to rest. More information will be forthcoming,” the post added in the caption.
The news of his death came a day after his family shared a heartbreaking health update through his Instagram account. In an emotional post, Hillman’s family shared Ronnie was diagnosed with Renal Medullary Carcinoma in August this year.
“Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC) is a rare but highly aggressive neoplasm form of cancer that primarily affects young African Americans with sickle cell trait. Unfortunately, treatment has not been successful and our beloved RJ is currently under Hospice Care where he is being kept comfortable and out of pain,” the caption added.
“We also understand that God’s will is not always ours; therefore, we as a family subject ourselves to the will of our Almighty God. We need your prayers, but we also need your understanding and respect for Ronnie and our family’s privacy at this time,” the family continued in the post.
Fellow NFLers and fans flooded the comment section of the recent Instagram post with tributes for the beloved player. “You fought to end bro, you’re a WARRIOR! I LOVE YOU FAMILY, I AM HEARTBROKEN,” former teammate Omar Bolden wrote.
“Fly high my brother rest easy man going to miss you love you my brother we have amazing memories,” Rice Owls coach CJ Anderson commented. “Man, you hate to see this happen to anyone. Just sad news all around. I know your family will rest easy knowing that you’re no longer in pain. #restinpower Ronnie,” former Broncos player Nick Ferguson wrote.
Earlier, radio host and former Broncos player David Wolfe shared an update about Hillman’s health talk show. “He’s got bad liver cancer and he’s in hospice now. It’s not looking good. He has pneumonia and I’m putting it out there just to send positive vibes his way.”
Former NFLer Orlando Franklin also shared on Twitter that Hillman was in hospice care after battling a rare form of cancer and a bout of pneumonia.
