THE chief executive officer of state carrier Garuda Indonesia said on Friday (Nov 15) he had been dismissed after shareholders came to a decision that he would be replaced.

CEO Irfan Setiaputra told Reuters in a text message that the decision was taken during a meeting of shareholders on Friday.

The airline had yet to announce his dismissal and did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.

“I accepted the decision professionally and being grateful for the trust that has been given to me,” Irfan, who served as Garuda CEO for more than four years, said.

Irfan in an interview with local media on Friday said he would be replaced by Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, the acting chief of budget airline Lion Air.

Lion Air did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Under Irfan’s tenure, the Garuda won creditors’ approval in 2022 to restructure more than US$9 billion of debt after it faced financial difficulties, including from pandemic-related travel curbs. REUTERS
