Conagra Brands is recalling over 2.5 million pounds of its canned meat and poultry products due to a “packaging defect that may cause the products to become contaminated,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Tuesday.
The recall affects products produced at the Iowa-based company’s Ford Madison plant between Dec. 12, 2022, and Jan. 13, 2023, and is focused on goods sold under the Armour brand, including Armour Vienna Sausage and Armour Chicken Vienna Sausage.
Vienna Sausages sold under several other brands, including Goya, Kroger, Walmart’s Great Value, Hargis, Prairie Belt, and Valrico are also affected.
The products subject to the recall bear the establishment number “P4247” on the can. They were shipped to retail locations nationwide. The full list of items can be found here.
“Subsequent investigation by the establishment determined that the cans subject to recall may have been damaged in a manner that is not readily apparent to consumers, which may allow foodborne pathogens to enter the cans,” said the USDA in a statement released Tuesday.
Conagra discovered the problem after finding spoiled and leaking cans from various production dates at their warehouse. Over 2.58 million pounds of meat are impacted by the recall.
The Agriculture Department added it is “concerned that some product may be on retail shelves or in consumers’ pantries.” Shoppers who have purchased these products are advised to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
There have been no reports of an adverse reaction from consuming the recalled product, and the department urged anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Canned foods are typically considered safe bets due to the packaging process extending their expiration dates. In the past, large-scale recalls have been issued due to an increased risk of botulism when an error occurs somewhere along the line.
