California Gov. Gavin Newsom slammed Republican Rep. Randy Fine over comments about the Muslim community.
“Resign now, you racist slob,” Newsom said in a social media publication.
He was responding to a message from Fine, who said he was reacting to a publication from a person he described as the “leader of one of the key mainstream Muslim groups that supported” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The publication in question said: “Finally, NYC is coming to Islam. Dogs definitely have a place in society, just not as indoor pets. Like we’ve said all along, they are unclean.”
Fine, on his end, reacted by saying that “if they force us to choose, the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one.”
Newsom was not the only Democrat who addressed the message. Rep. Yassamin Ansari said that “if anyone said something this vile in any workplace, they’d be fired.”
“Randy Fine has repeatedly dehumanized Muslims without consequence. It’s unacceptable and should not be normalized by Congress.” She went on to urge House Speaker Mike Johnson to “reprimand him immediately.” “And if Fine cannot meet the most basic standard of human dignity, he should resign,” she added.
Fine has repeatedly stirred controversy over comments about Muslims. Back in December he said he was “actively considering” a move to expel Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House over a fundraising email from her campaign suggesting he should be expelled for saying Muslims should be “destroyed.”
“I won’t send out fundraising emails calling for her expulsion. If I’m going to do that, you will see me bring the piece of paper. And I am actively considering that,” Fine said. He went on to reference unproven allegations that she married her brother and what he described as her “general embrace of Muslim terror.”
