The Republican party’s official X account mocked Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett after she announced her candidacy to the U.S. Senate.
“Low-IQ Jasmine Crockett is officially running in Texas for U.S. Senate. This is really who the Democrats are clearing the field for,” the account said following the announcement.
The post includes a video to its more than 3.4 million followers with different clips of her the party deems unfavorable.
“I want to people to understand that there are crimes that are committed not because people are criminals but because they are literally trying to survive,” one of them says.
“That we know how to use a chair. whether we’re pulling it up or we’re doing something else with it,” she says in another.
In this context, Democratic Sen. John Fetterman told CNN’s Manu Raju that her profile is the kind that the GOP “wants to run.”
Crockett confirmed her candidacy on Monday after hinting at such a decision for weeks. She threw her hat into the ring hours before the deadline to do so and will now seek to unseat the incumbent, Republican Sen. John Cornyn, who is also facing a challenge within the party from state Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Also on Monday former Rep. Colin Allred announced he is dropping out of the race, likely as a result of Crockett’s better chances of becoming the nominee. State Rep. James Talarico has not dropped out is campaigning for the seat.
Discussing a potential run, Crockett said days ago that data gathered by her and her team shows she would be a competitive candidate. “The evaluation made it clear that the coalition that won the elections that took place on November 4 was heavily comprised of “Black and Brown folks.”
“When you look at the numbers in New Jersey, Virginia, Black and Brown people showed up and voted the right way. I am the leading candidate when it comes to those specific constituencies. So it does make it to where I am very formidable regardless of what people may want to put out,” Crockett said.
Crockett came out on top of a recent poll of potential Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate. Conducted by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University among over 1,600 registered voters between September 19 and October 1, it showed Crockett with 31% of the support, compared to state Talarico (25%), former Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke (25%) and Allred (13%). The margin of error was +/- 2.4%.
