TikTok influencer Megha Thakur, 21, died “unexpectedly,” her parents have revealed in an Instagram post.
Rumors have been swirling around the social media star’s mysterious death, including one which claims she passed after being involved in a car collision in Ontario, Canada. However, her parents have not disclosed the exact cause of her demise.
Thakur passed away “in the early morning hours” of Nov. 24, her parents noted in the post, which also indicated that a funeral service was scheduled for Nov. 29.
Followers of the late TikTok star are now looking back at the lessons she left them with as they deal with the reality that there won’t be any more encouraging words from the skinny-legend Thakur, who harnessed her struggles to breathe self-confidence into those who looked up to her.
“Megha Thakur passed she was one of my favorite influencers on IG, she was very open and transparent about the way she felt and she was an advocate for girls who felt like they were too skinny and she helped me with my confidence. May her soul Rest In Peace,” one of her followers wrote in a tweet.
“Just found out Megha Thakur passed (meghaminnd on ig) and this honestly broke my heart bc she’s helped me so much with my body dysmorphia and feeling confident in my own skin and I just she had her whole life ahead of her and she had so much love to share,” another fan tweeted.
“Rest in peace Megha Thakur, you inspired so many and encouraged everyone to love themselves just the way they are, i know you’re in a better place now,” a third noted.
A couple of weeks before her death, Thakur posted a “get ready with me” video in which she mentioned that her anxiety had turned into stress and resulted in a heart attack. While Thakur kept the video light and funny, her fans could not help but get worried about her. They even flooded the clip’s comments section with messages of support.
Fans revisited the said post following her death, wondering if the condition mentioned in the video had something to do with her passing.
Some also revisited Thakur’s old posts which truly became a source of inspiration for her followers.
Among them was a post Thakur created in celebration of her 20th birthday — the day when she came to appreciate her true self for the first time.
“My brown skin, brown hair, brown eyes, and brown culture were never appreciated by those around me and I always felt that if I was defined by any color other than brown, I’d finally be happy with myself,” Thakur noted as she shared some photos of herself sporting a brown bandeau top with sexy cutouts. These images were said to be a celebration of her brown skin as well.
There was also this post in which she did the twerk challenge and proved: “If I can wibble you can wobble.”
The clip came at a time when the internet was flooded with negativity directed at skinny girls posting videos of themselves doing the challenge.
“Posting in honour of 50 million on TikTok!! If you told my flat a– years ago that strangers and celebrities would recognize me for teaching them how to move their butt I’d have snorted but here we are! FLAT GO SPLAT,” the influencer wrote.
In another post, Thakur spoke about being body shamed at 13 by a boy who ridiculed her for being “flat.”
“I still get body shamed every day but the difference between now and then is that I know the only opinion that matters is my own, and I say that my body’s perfectly fine the way it is. I didn’t choose to look like this, but I choose to love the way I look regardless – and you should too,” she wrote at the time.
The final post she made was of her reminding her supporters, “YOU’RE in charge. Remember that #confidence #selflove,” while she walked the streets of New York a week before her death.
In their post about Thakur’s death, her parents described the influencer as a “confident and independent young woman.”
“She will be dearly missed. She loved her fans and would have wanted you to know of her passing. At this time, we request your blessings for Megha. Your thoughts and prayers will be with her in her onward journey,” they added.
