The House committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol will make criminal referrals to the Department of Justice, the panel’s chairman told reporters Tuesday.
For months, the bipartisan Jan. 6 Committee has conducted hundreds of interviews to determine who was at fault for the events on January 6. The committee has given a little hint as to who would be named in the referrals, but it is widely expected to include mention of former president Trump.
A panel subcommittee has deliberated on whether to send criminal referrals to the DOJ, potentially suggesting charges ranging from conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress.
The subcommittee includes: Representatives Liz Cheney, Republican of Wyoming; Jamie Raskin, Democrat of Maryland; Zoe Lofgren, Democrat of California; and Adam B. Schiff, Democrat of California. They’re all lawyers.
The full committee will now meet on Tuesday, where chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, says the referrals will be “part of the discussion.”
Thompson said members are expected to decide by the end of the week, hoping to avoid the incoming cessation of the committee, when Republicans officially retake control of the House in January.
Axios reports that a sizable final report is also expected to arrive from the committee, totaling around 1,000 pages. The report will likely include full transcripts of interviews, along with incriminating evidence not yet seen by the public. Trump and many of his allies are expected to be featured.
