The new Brickland station, between Chao Chu Kang and Bukit Gombak stations on the North South line, is targeted to commence passenger service in 2034
[SINGAPORE] The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a civil contract for the design and construction of the new Brickland MRT station and viaduct to Obayashi Corporation at a contract value of around S$281 million.
Construction works are expected to start in the first half of 2026, with passenger service for the station targeted to commence in 2034, said the LTA on Tuesday (Dec 30).
Located between Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Gombak stations on the North-South MRT Line, Brickland station will be the third MRT station to be built on an existing elevated rail line after Canberra station on the North-South Line and Dover station on the East-West Line, the authority said.
Once complete, the new station will serve existing and future residential developments in Keat Hong, Bukit Batok West, Pavilion Park and the Brickland district in Tengah Town.
It will also serve educational institutions in the vicinity, such as ITE College West, Swiss Cottage Secondary School and St Anthony’s Primary School, by providing more direct access to the rail network.
The LTA noted that Obayashi Corporation, one of Japan’s biggest contractors, has an established track record in infrastructure projects. These include rail station and tunnel projects in Singapore and abroad.
The Japanese construction and real estate firm is currently involved in projects for the second phase of the Cross Island Line, Singapore’s eighth MRT line, via its joint venture (JV) with Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore). The contract, which was awarded to the JV in 2022, involves tunnelling works under the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.
Engineering works
The LTA said that significant engineering works are required to add the new NS3A station to the existing rail network.
These include the building of a new viaduct to facilitate the diversion of train services from existing viaducts. This will allow modification works to be conducted safely on the existing rail infrastructure and systems while maintaining North-South Line train operations during construction, LTA said.
New crossover tracks will be laid between existing tracks and new tracks, it said. A new siding will be created for use in the event of train faults, to improve service recovery and resilience along this stretch of the North-South Line, the authority said.
A temporary protection enclosure will be installed over some stretches of the track during construction and some works will be carried out at night after train operation hours to ensure commuter safety, LTA added.
During construction, the LTA and the appointed contractor will provide residents and relevant stakeholders with regular updates on the progress of the works.
