One Dead, Several Injured In Michigan State University Shooting: Officials

A gunman opened fire at locations in Michigan State University (MSU) Monday, killing one person and injuring several others, according to reports.

The first shots were fired shortly before 8:20 p.m. that night inside MSU’s Berkey Hall on the north end of the campus near Grand River and Farm Lane in East Lansing, Michigan, the university said.

Police reported another shooting at the IM East gym about an hour later, CNN reported.

There was one fatality from the shooting inside Berkey Hall, which houses the College of Social Science, the Department of Sociology and the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research, according to MSU spokeswoman Emily Guerrant.

She later added that there were also “unknown fatalities,” The Detroit News reported.

Five injured victims were transported to nearby Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, John Foren, a spokesman for the hospital, said.

The victims are in the emergency room, according to Foren, but he would not comment on the severity of their injuries nor would he comment on whether or not there were any other fatalities, per CNN.

Law enforcement reportedly closed down Grand River between Abbot Road and Division Avenue.

Several departments were on the scene, including agencies from neighboring forces such as the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, Meridian Township police and Ingham County Sheriff’s Department.

Berkey Hall, Brody Hall, Snyder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall and the MSU Union have all been cleared and/or secured, MSU Police and Public Safety said in a series of tweets.

The gunman, described by the campus police force as “a short male with a mask, possibly Black,” is still at large, according to authorities.

All MSU campus activities were canceled for 48 hours, MSU Police and Public Safety announced on the night of the shooting.

The force advised everyone not to go to MSU Tuesday.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been briefed on the shooting, she announced on Twitter.

“We will keep everyone updated as we learn more,” Whitmer wrote.

Michigan State Secretary Jocelyn Benson also released a statement following the shooting, which she called an “unfathomable” incident.

“Holding the entire MSU community in my heart. This repetitive terror cannot continue. We must come together and do whatever it takes to protect our kids & communities from gun violence,” Benson said on Twitter.
