- England defeated Senegal 3-0 in World Cup 2022
- Bellingham assisted Henderson’s goal in the first half
- The midfielder now has a goal and an assist in the tournament
England boss Gareth Southgate has pointed out why he thinks his midfielder Jude Bellingham is better than the other young players.
England have qualified for the quarter-finals of World Cup 2022 and the Borussia Dortmund midfielder has had a significant role to play in their campaign. Bellingham’s “mentality” stands him out from the other players, said Southgate.
“I think the biggest thing is the mentality. Obviously, we’ve done a lot of work over the years with young players and young player development. And the thing that makes the difference is the mindset, the drive, and the desire to learn and improve. And he has all of that. I think with him, Phil, and Bukayo tonight, it felt the right moment for them and they all stepped up,” he told reporters.
Bellingham was involved in the first two goals in England’s 3-0 win over Senegal in their Round of 16 game Sunday. After assisting Jordan Henderson’s opening goal, he was involved in the lead-up to Harry Kane’s strike as well. The 19-year-old midfielder has a goal and an assist in the campaign.
Southgate also credited Liverpool skipper Henderson’s “influence” in Bellingham’s success this tournament.
“I have to say with Hendo as well because those two out of possession really got us into the game. We were a bit stuck with the ball and our best moments were turning the ball over. I think Hendo’s influence is allowing Jude more freedom positionally. He responded to that remarkably well,” Southgate added.
Going into the World Cup in Qatar, Bellingham had produced a great run for Borussia Dortmund across all competitions. The English midfielder has netted nine goals and three assists in 22 competitive appearances for the Bundesliga club.
Even Manchester City forward Phil Foden heaped praise on Bellingham.
“I don’t want to big up Jude Bellingham too much because he’s still young, but he’s one of the most gifted players I’ve ever seen. I don’t see a weakness in his game. He’s got everything, and he’s going to be the best midfielder in the world, for sure,” said Foden.
England have a big quarter-final game coming up as they are set to take on World Cup champions France on Saturday.
