Smelling Salts for Teenage Athletes: The Benefits and Risks Parents Should Know
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Many teenage athletes are turning to smelling salts as a quick way to boost energy and focus during sports. These salts release ammonia gas, which irritates the nose and lungs, causing a sharp inhalation reflex.

This reaction brings more oxygen into the body and activates the fight-or-flight response, which can increase alertness and heart rate for a few minutes. Some athletes feel that smelling salts provides a burst of energy and helps them concentrate better before or during a game. Because of this, they are often seen on the sidelines of contact sports like football and hockey, where players use them as a pre-game ritual or to stay sharp during intense moments.

Know the Risks for Teens

However, parents should know that using smelling salts comes with risks, especially for young athletes. The ammonia in the salts can irritate the throat, nose, and eyes, sometimes causing coughing or discomfort. Overuse can lead to chemical burns inside the nose or damage to lung tissue.

Smelling salts might also worsen existing respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis. Another major concern is that these salts can mask pain from serious injuries, like concussions, making young athletes less likely to get the medical attention they need. This can be dangerous, as symptoms may go unnoticed until it’s too late.

Experts recommend parents talk to their kids about safer ways to improve performance, such as proper warm-ups, hydration, and nutrition, instead of relying on quick fixes like smelling salts.

Balancing Benefits and Safety

While smelling salts may provide a brief boost in energy and focus, parents should weigh these benefits against the possible harms. The temporary rush might seem helpful on the field, but it could lead to longer-term health issues and hidden injuries.

Many sports organizations have raised concerns and even banned the use of smelling salts in youth sports to protect young players. It’s important for parents to stay informed and discuss the potential risks and safer alternatives with their teenage athletes to ensure both their performance and health are supported.

What Parents Can Do

In conclusion, smelling salts are more than just a quick pick-me-up; they come with safety concerns that teens and parents should understand. Encouraging good sports habits like warming up well, staying hydrated, and eating healthy will help keep young athletes strong and ready without risking harm. Parents have a key role in guiding their teens to make smart choices that protect their health now and in the future.
