The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a court-authorised search warrant on 28 January 2026 in Fulton County, Georgia, amid US President Donald Trump‘s claims of a fraudulent 2020 election.
According to a CNN exclusive, the search to seize records is in relation to Trump’s efforts to probe alleged fraud in the 2020 US presidential election. Fulton County officials have been previously sued by the Justice Department to compel them to submit election records. Mo Ivory, Fulton County Commissioner, said of the FBI agents currently at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center, ‘They are in there collecting 700 boxes of ballots right now.’
Robb Pitts, Fulton County Commission Chairman, said in a statement, ‘All I know is that as long as those boxes have been in control of the county in this facility that they were safe and they were secure. We can no longer, and I can no longer as chair of this board, satisfy not only the citizens of Atlanta but the citizens of the world that those ballots are still secure.’
Fulton County Raid
Fulton County spokesperson Jessica Corbitt-Dominguez confirmed that the FBI was seeking records from the 2020 election at the county’s main election facility in Union City. The search warrant, which was signed by a federal judge, came despite repeated court findings that suggested against Trump’s claims of a fraudulent election in 2020.

Over the past five years, Fulton County’s 2020 election ballots have been sealed and repeatedly targeted by Trump’s allies, seeking to review them. By law, the state of Georgia permits the unsealing of these ballots with a state judge’s order. The FBI’s search warrant reportedly comes from a federal judge, as reported by Capitol Beat.
State Election Board member Sara Tindall Ghazal said, ‘I’m not concerned about finding actual evidence because I think it’s very clear that nothing except some poor administration happened. What I’m concerned about is the federal government using and abusing its authority.’ Also present at the search was Salleigh Grubbs, who said she looks forward to a thorough investigation.
For years, Fulton has been the target of Republicans for alleged inaccuracies, despite repeated investigations showing no deliberate efforts to alter the results. Sen. Josh McLaurin of D-Sandy Springs said, ‘This is extremely alarming. I think Fulton County and Georgia in general are tired of being the target of Donald Trump’s narcissism, that’s all this is about. He is dispatching federal officials at the highest levels of government to try to vindicate his agenda.’
The Department of Justice has not issued any statement regarding the search. Georgia director of voting rights group All Voting Is Local, Kristin Nabers, told reporters, ‘This is another step in the FBI doing the president’s bidding to create a criminal case against Georgia. By carrying out this farce of an investigation, election deniers are trying to placate his delusions. This is a power grab.’

Broader Implications
The FBI and President Trump’s actions at the Fulton County Elections Office highlight concerns about the role of federal law enforcement in the elections. Though Trump’s allies contend that the FBI was simply carrying out their duties, their refusal to provide details on the specifics of the probe has already sparked a national debate.
