Canelo Alvarez is undefeated against Gennady Golovkin in a pair of controversial fights. Betting odds suggest that there shouldn’t be a question about the winner of the trilogy bout.
Alvarez is a significant betting favorite for the third installment with -550 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook. Golovkin is a +410 underdog, making the knockout artist a relative longshot to finally score a win over his rival.
The most likely outcome is an Alvarez victory by decision, according to the odds. Alvarez has -110 odds to beat Golovkin on points. Alvarez has +180 odds to defeat Golovkin by knockout or TKO.
Golovkin has +700 odds to outpoint Alvarez, which many viewers felt he did in each of their first two fights. The underdog is given +950 odds to knock out Alvarez.
The odds of a draw are +1800.
The first meeting between Alvarez and Golovkin ended in a split draw on Sept. 16, 2017. Golovkin landed more punches in 10 of the 12 rounds, along with 49 more punches total, according to CompuBox. A stunning 118-110 score in favor of Alvarez from one of the judges salvaged a draw for the Mexican boxer.
Canelo vs. GGG 2 on Sept. 15, 2018, was a much closer contest. Golovkin landed 32 more total punches than Alvarez, who connected with 27 more power punches. Alvarez won by majority decision.
Four years later, Alvarez has the clear advantage. The 32-year-old has won seven bouts since last facing Golovkin, holding off Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev. Golovkin has gone 4-0 since suffering his only loss as a pro, though he’s no longer in the prime of his career at 40 years old.
“[GGG] is one of the best [opponents I have ever faced], obviously. He is one of the best,” Alvarez said, via CBS Sports.
“I think he’s in the top five because he is one of the best fighters I have ever faced.
“Look, that’s my goal for this fight [to knock him out]. That’s my goal but obviously this is boxing and you never know what is going to happen. I have prepared myself for 12 rounds and if I have the opportunity to end the fight before the 12th round, I’m going to do it.”
Alvarez was proven not to be invincible when he last stepped inside the ring. Dmitry Bivol upset Alvarez on May 7 with a unanimous decision victory in a light heavyweight title fight. The only other time Alvarez had been defeated was when he fought Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
After losing the 175-pound bout, Alvarez will face Golovkin at 168 pounds.
