A pair of twin girls has discovered their pregnant mother on the floor after she was fatally stabbed with a screwdriver in their New York residence, according to New York Daily News.
The suspect is still on the run, police reportedly said.
The victim, identified as Theresa Gregg, 37, was a police officer with the city Department of Homeless Services. Her 14-year-old twin daughters found her motionless on the bedroom floor of their fourth-floor Williamsburg apartment on May 14.
The hysterical twins dialed 911 and performed CPR on their mother, who was two or three months pregnant at the time of the incident.
One of the teens allowed responding officers inside the apartment while the other was still trying to resuscitate the mother.
Cops found a bloodied screwdriver at the scene.
Gregg was stabbed to death by her 35-year-old live-in boyfriend, sources reportedly said. However, the New York City Police Department has not officially named him as the suspect.
The mother had a heated argument with her boyfriend before he allegedly stabbed her with the screwdriver and escaped. The man was nowhere to be found following the stabbing.
Sources told the outlet that the twins fell asleep listening to the sound of their mother arguing with the live-in boyfriend inside their bedroom.
The girls later told cops that the couple fought all evening. They found the body of their mother facedown in the bedroom when they woke up the next day at around 8:20 a.m.
The twins were told by the 911 operator to turn their mother’s body over and start CPR.
First responders declared her dead at around 8:45 a.m.
Police found Gregg with stab wounds on both sides of her neck and upper body. Her wounds also suggest that she sustained repeated blows to her head, SILive.com reported.
Gregg’s twin daughters “were so beautiful, so respectful,” JoHanna Hidalgo, 38, a teacher who lives in the same building, told New York Daily News. “Every morning I would see them. They were in middle school. They’re twins so they would walk to school with their friends. … Those girls were so sweet.”
A next-door neighbor said she often heard arguments taking place at Gregg’s apartment.
“Both of their voices were loud,” the neighbor told the outlet. “I’m not sure how often they fought but it was a lot.”
