The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Prize in Economic Sciences to Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford on 12 October 2026. The Academy cited their work on the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilization. It said their research helps governments and central banks reduce swings in the economy.

As of 13 October 2026, the Academy’s website lists the laureates and the 12 October announcement. Ara, a Barcelona-based outlet, reported the same names on the day of the announcement and describes both laureates as American academics. The sections below set out what the sources say and what remains unconfirmed.

The problem the laureates set out to explain

The Academy’s account, as reported by Ara, starts from the view that the economy does not always move predictably. Recessions, rising unemployment, falling interest rates and sudden inflation can all occur, and their causes are sometimes hard to identify.

The laureates’ work began in the 1970s, when Keynesian macroeconomic theories were being questioned. The oil crisis brought high unemployment and high inflation at the same time. Many economists concluded that Keynesian stabilization policies did more harm than good, the Academy said. Hall and Woodford argued that those theories remained relevant but that their framework needed to be rebuilt.

The central idea is that stabilization policy has to begin with two things: how households decide how much to consume, and how firms set prices. The Academy said this framework is used by policymakers around the world. In the Academy’s framing, the aim is to limit the risk that the economy becomes trapped in an out-of-control situation.

How the framework connects to central bank guidance

Woodford said managing expectations is a key element of modern macroeconomic policy, according to Ara’s report of his remarks by phone after the announcement. He cited the 2008 financial crisis as the event that most tested his model.

He highlighted forward guidance, the practice of announcing future policy moves, including as used by the European Central Bank. In his account, clearer guidance on the likely path of interest rates was an important part of post-crisis responses, although it did not solve the problem on its own.

The sources reviewed for this article do not discuss any specific Federal Reserve rate decision. They describe the framework as one used by central banks in general, and they do not state how it applies to US policy. The Academy’s stated aim is to lower the risk that the economy becomes trapped in an out-of-control situation, as the Ara summary puts it.

The Ara report gives no description of Hall’s individual contributions and no direct quotes from him. This article therefore attributes no specific finding to him beyond the Academy’s joint citation.

Inflation data release date, still unresolved

A September consumer price index release on 14 October could not be confirmed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics release schedule, read on 13 October 2026, did not list a September 2026 release. Its earliest entry is for October 2026 data, due 10 November 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Because the date is unresolved, this article does not state a release time for it.

The Academy’s homepage links to a press release naming the laureates, but the page gives no date for it, and the full release was not read for this article. The official wording of the citation is therefore not reproduced here.

The Academy said this framework is used by policymakers around the world.

What is confirmed and what is not

Two points are confirmed by the sources read: the names of the laureates and the 12 October 2026 announcement date. The Academy’s homepage lists the announcement as an event on that date, and Ara’s report says the announcement was made “this Monday”, which is 12 October 2026. Both the Academy’s homepage and the Ara report name Hall and Woodford as the laureates.

Open points are the exact wording of the Academy’s full citation, the Academy’s own explanation in its press release, and the quotations attributed to Woodford, which come from a second-hand report. The release calendar in this article rests on the BLS schedule page alone.
